Thank you Ashish. But can guest blogging alone impact the rankings for certain keywords with high competition?

When you get into high competition keywords, the quality of backlinks is far more important than the quantity.

As Twix has stated, the quality of links is by far the most important aspect.

Before Google removed PR (page rank) from public view it was easy to see what sites Google thought were important.  Now it is not so easy to determine a quality blog site.

To give you an idea of quality when speaking of links...

It takes 10 PR 1 links to equal just 1 PR 2 link
It takes 10 PR 2 links to equal just 1 PR 3 link
This formula is the same  all the way up to PR 10 links.

So lets take a single PR 3 link and calulate the number of PR 1 links needed to equal that link.

10  PR 1 links quality wise are need to equal a single PR 2 link, then you need 10 PR 2 links to equal a single PR 3 links.

Based upon this formula it would take 100 PR 1 links to equal the quality of a single PR 3 link.  Now you have some idea of how powerful a mere PR 4 links is, ie it is worth 1000 PR 1 links or 100 PR 2 links or 10 PR 3 Links.

Do not think that just posting links on blogs will help you rank your site.  There are some sign post to take notice of.

1.  Does the site give anyone a "DoFollow" link, if it does, the site is worthless, because everyone is getting a link from them and Google will see the site as a link farm.

2.  Does the site have 1000's of OBLs (outbound DoFollow links).  If it does again Google may see the site as a link farm.   You need to understand that if a page has 10 OBLs  and lets say that this particular page has a PR of 4 then you need to divide the PR of the page by the number of OBLs.
This means 4 / 10 = .4  so each OBL is only passing .4 link juice to the destination site.  Imagine if the page had 100 outbound links then the juice would only be .04 per link.  You can see that this is a worthless site to get a link from.

3.  You only need one link from a site, not two, not three.  As you get more and more links from a site you get a diminishing return.

4.  To have a backlink profile of all "DoFollow" links is a bad idea.  This is easily seen as SERP rank manipulation.  It is most un-natural.  You need a mix of DoFollow and NoFollow.  The majority of links you have should not be DoFollow.  Again this is not a good sign.  So do your backlink research on the blog, check there profile before you post that link.

5.  Some of the best links you can get are .Org and .Edu and if you can swing it .Gov.  These are some of the most cherished links you can get.  You want to get some .Edu links, here is a way.  Create a scholarship, it doesn't have to be hugh, maybe 500 Doillars.  Pick an instution of higher learning and set it up and bam badaboom badabing you get an .Edu backlink.  Basically you create the scholarship in exchange for the backlink.  Happens all the time.

6.  PBN's can be a way to go.  But be forewarned, when the PBN is found out, you site getting juice from it will plummet into Serp Hell, ie nowhere to be found and your traffic will dry up. They work but eventually all PBN's are found out.

7.  Forum signatures, can work same as blogs, but understand this.  To put a link to your site from a forum such as this forum is not the greatest idea.  Why you ask ?  Folks are coming here to learn about SEO.  They are not coming here to find a lawyer, or a vacation spot somewhere exotic.  They are here for SEO knowledge so where would the relevancy be.  No one is coming here to find a lawyer, nor are they coming here to find a exotic vacation spot.

Truly the best link building strategy is to write "Best Of Web Content" such that people want to link to your content and share it to the world.  We call this Link Earning.   Alas tho, not everyone is a Best of Web Content Creator, so we build links !!

Links will help your pages to rank higher in Google search results, this post explains why. That’s perfectly true. That, however, is not the only thing links do. Back links will also help in getting more (referral) traffic to your site via those links. When you determine your link building strategy you should keep in mind: the reason links were invented was to send you off to pages you might enjoy as well. Use link building as a strategy for the growth of your website audience and place links on sites that will actually generate traffic to your own site.

1. Get to Know Your Audience
2. Make a list of websites that appeal to your desired audience
3. Write amazing content
4. Match content to websites
5. Reach out
6. Use social media!
